Square And Compasses
The teachings of Freemasonry are taught through allegory and symbolism. Of all of the symbols used, the Square and the Compasses are probably among the most recognized symbols of Freemasonry.
The Square is used by operative Masons as a tool for testing the accuracy of angles and the precision of cut stones. Squared stones must fit firmly together to make a sound building. To Freemasons, the Square symbolizes things of the earth. It is a symbol of morality, truthfulness and honesty and the way we should relate to this world and the people in it. It is meant to remind us to square our actions with virtue. To 'act upon the square' is to act honestly. Just as squared stones must fit firmly together, squaring our acts and thoughts should build a structure of sound character.
The compasses symbolize things of the spirit and the importance of a well-developed spiritual life. The Compasses reminds us to keep ourselves within "due bounds" through watchfulness and restraint and to be truthful to ourselves. It is a symbol of control, skill and knowledge. That which is harmful or unworthy should remain outside the circle of the compasses.
The G stands for Geometry, the science of which the ancients believed most revealed the glory of God and His works in the heavens. It also stands for God, who must be at the center of all our thoughts and all of our efforts.
The Square and Compasses along with the Holy Bible are referred to in Freemasonry as The Great Lights. The Great Lights of Masonry embrace human nature as guiding principals for the body, mind and soul. The Square for our body (actions), the Compasses for our mind and the Holy Bible for our soul. Freemasons believe that as a man honestly sees through these Great Lights into his own heart and into his relations with his fellow man ...... only then will his life be gladden, steadfast and genuine.
